340B Health Principles of Program Stewardship

Adopted November 2015

For more than 20 years, the 340B drug pricing program has helped health care providers that serve large numbers of poor and vulnerable patients to better meet their missions and stretch scarce resources. As a community, the members of 340B Health abide by the following principles of program stewardship:

  • 340B Health member hospitals use savings from the 340B program to invest in maintaining, improving or expanding access to pharmaceuticals and/or other patient care services that benefit patients, in particular the low-income, uninsured and underinsured populations and document how those savings are used
  • 340B Health member hospitals maintain meaningful policies under which qualifying indigent patients receive medically necessary health care services, medications and pharmacy support services for free or at reduced cost
  • 340B Health member hospitals using contract pharmacies allow qualifying indigent patients to access pharmaceuticals at free or at a reduced cost at their contract pharmacies or through other arrangements
  • 340B Health member hospitals provide safe and cost-effective care that results in improved health outcomes

The 340B Health Stewardship Principles were developed in November 2015 in close consultation with our Board of Directors. Hospitals affiliated with the 340B Health Board of Directors who endorsed these principles in 2015 include:
