Artificial intelligence holds promise for strengthening 340B operations and compliance, but experts say hospitals and health systems must proceed carefully when it comes to adopting AI. On today’s new episode of our 340B Insight podcast, we spoke with Kristin Chupka, the 340B program system director for Dartmouth Health. She shares how her system has brought automation into its 340B operations and how it is considering bringing in AI technology as well. (Transcript)

Show notes

  • The difference between automation and AI Chupka distinguishes between automation, through which people direct a machine to make processes faster and more efficient, and AI, which involves a machine learning and making decisions based on what it learns. Both hold the promise for better 340B operations but require ensuring continued compliance and protection against harm to patients and providers.

  • Opportunities and considerations AI has great potential for the 340B world but comes with possible ethical and legal risks. Chupka discusses taking a conservative approach and keeping guardrails in place while providers become more comfortable with the technology.

  • Future AI plans Dartmouth Health has employed automation into its internal 340B auditing and is exploring potential ways that AI might play an appropriate role in budget modeling and performance measurement, to start. While there is still some apprehension in the 340B community about AI, Chupka expressed optimism that providers will learn enough about the technology to become more comfortable with it.
